missionary's son. You see, the missionary's children are right up against it, because depending upon where their father was a missionary, what part of China they were in, they made friends with the local people. Those were the only Chinese they knew, you know. Eventually some of those Chinese in some places chose the Communist part, and others chose something else. There they find themselves, with a lot of acquaintances from childhood whom they've been certainly very nice to. They entertained them when they came to this country, and were glad to see them, all that sort of thing. I never saw the slightest thing out of the way with Lauchlin Currie, and I'm fairly sophisticated in spotting a Communist-minded person. Nothing fancy about him. I saw him a number of times. We dealt with each other on matters of, oh, all kinds of labor situations and so forth, and he was interested in certain things and would come over to talk about them. I never saw anything that made me remotely suspicious of him. That's that.

When he was being sent out to China, I remember that there was considerable hope that he could make an accommodation. Of course, the great problem was how to spruce up the Chinese fighting. A great many people went out to Chungking, you know.
