I just couldn't get around to that kind of thing in the afternoon, or cocktail parties either. I just never could make them if I had wanted to. The cocktail parties are largely post-war, you know. They're not pre-war.

Lawrence Houghteling's wife had been invited. Now, the Hurleys lived a little on the outskirts of the city, and the Houghteling family only had one car.
