By that, you would assume he meant that Roosevelt had assured him that Wallace was to be the next Vice President?

I think that that's what Wallace meant. I assumed so at the time, that he meant that. I said, “Nevertheless, I would not go where I could not be seen every morning. Out of sight is out of mind, very easily.”

And I meant the President--and a lot of other people, too, you know, but principally the President, and the people around him. To be away, to be out of the country, to be out of touch, to be where you didn't have to be looked in the eye every day or two, you know?

It was only for about two months.
