withdrawal. I don't remember, except that we heard--

Oh yes, I do remember. I remember the Wallace thing. I went to the evening session of the Convention quite early to get a good seat. I didn't want to sit on the platform because I couldn't see the audience as well, but there was a row of seats just off the platform and off to one side that were very good seats if you could get them. So Belle Roosevelt and I went over early, and one or two other people may have joined us later, and sat down in those seats where we could really see the whole thing.

I remember I had full anticipation that Wallace would be nominated.

On the first ballot?

Yes. I thought so. It had been my understanding that that was what was scheduled, and he had reassured me that that was what was going to be done, and we thought it was going to happen.

Then, when it didn't happen on the first ballot, there was quite a lot of consternation broke out. And it was then, you see, that the labor people who were in the Convention-- the Chicago labor people were packed in tight in some of the galleries, and I remember David Dubinsky rushing around with a great deal of air--made a heavy protest. But you know, they didn't stick with their protest. They made a heavy and
