the morning train. I'll take a cab.”

“You'll be down tonight, won't you?”

I said, “No, I'm coming on the midnight train.”

“Miss Perkins, they say on the radio that the Cabinet's been called in for tonight.”

I said, “No, Delaney.”

“I was at the ball park and I heard them say it.”

I said, “I don't know what you mean.”

He said, “It's all over the radio. Aren't you coming right down?”

“No, I'm not, but tell me where I can get you.” I was completely bewildered as to what he was talking about. He kept on saying, “I heard it at the ball park.” I said, “Tell me where I can reach you. I'll call you back.

He didn't say anything about war. He just said, “The radio says the Cabinet's all been called back on account of the trouble.” I couldn't understand what he meant and I never believed anything anybody heard on the radio. People like Delaney were always listening to the radio anyhow. I started to get dressed and wondered what in the world he meant, thinking, “Who shall I call to find out what he was talking about?” I was thinking of calling Miss Jay. Then the telephone rang again.

This was the White House operator, saying, “This is Hackie. The President wanted me to find you and tell you that
