uniforms with the fronts all embroidered with gold galloon braid, and tail coats, and the cocked hat with the white feather in it, you know--magnificent affairs. On Inauguration Days, and on the occasion of the White House diplomatic reception, and on a few other state occasions, they were these diplomatic uniforms and their cocked hats with feathers in them.

I think I've told you how Ronald Lindsay adopted the uniform of the Archers of St. Andrews for his costume, because it was such a good wet weather costume. He had his cocked hat thing, but he never wore it except for indoor ceremonies.

The new Russian uniform? I don't remember the hat. I think they had some kind of a peaked cap. The coat was like a sort of a double-breasted affair, with brass buttons and great boards on the shoulders, epaulets and fringes and galloon, and red in the collar with embroidery on it. It had a belt and a diplomatic sword--a short sword. A short diplomatic sword. If diplomatic swords were in fashion in other Embassies, I don't remember seeing them. They probably were, but they were long swords. These were short diplomatic swords, and they all wore them.

Gromyko, of course, was outfitted with one of these. Soon after this interview that I had had with him, I was invited to a reception of some sort--a rather small reception.
