because we'd brought with us packages of sugar and prunes and bacons and various things to give to our friends. Whenever you went out anywhere in London--the same way in Paris-- people would invite you to come to their house to tea, or to come to their house for dinner or lunch occasionally, but oh dear, hardly--we always went taking a box, two pounds of prunes and a pound of sugar, as a little tribute, but really to add to their supply. We had a lot of food with us. Well, we did very well in London, as a matter of fact. Nothing to complain about. Bacon was rationed, even. We hadn't seen bacon in this country through the War. Couldn't buy it. But in London it was rationed, and you were entitled to one slice of bacon for your breakfast. That was that. You got your bacon. It was perfectly all right.

Still, there was a great shortage of the things Americans depend upon and rely upon, such as oranges and grapefruit and salad, things of that sort. I remember we walked into the Hotel Californie. We got in extremely early in the morning. We had a cup of coffee and went to bed, and didn't show up until noon. Then we went down to the hotel dining-room to get lunch. We were told we had to eat there. That was our regular place. “You must eat in the hotel. You mustn't eat anywhere else. You mustn't try to go into a restaurant, mustn't try to get your meals in restaurants. Eat your meals in the hotel, because that's where Americans have been provided for, and it's our food, and we aren't making any
