really quite remarkable to see those people again.
The whole pattern for the postwar operations of the I.L.O. was laid out. The congress adopted resolutions, you see, authorizing the directors to do this and that with the United Nations. There were a great many resolutions with regard to the redistribution of labor--I mean prisoners were just coming out of camps, you see, and so forth. I think I've told you about this tragic thing of meeting people who were just out of the camps. We met other people, too, who were not in the I.L.O. but would be brought by somebody. There was a young girl who had spent five years in a prison camp. She was just one of the few that didn't get pushed into a crematorium. She was almost beside herself--I mean, she could hardly hold herself together, she was so nervous. She kept saying, “I realize what I must do. I must find a way to work for other people so I can forget this in good works.”
Very philosophical type. I remember her plainly. Senator Goddard, of the French Senate, was a very handsome old man. Oh yes, he had wanted to be elected the President. Oh, how he wanted to be President of the I.L.O. It was all decided behind the scenes that he was not suitable. He was not young enough. He was quite old, and it was decided that he wouldn't be suitable and that somebody from France wouldn't be acceptable at this time. I think we elected Rappelier of Switzerland. Yes, I know we did.
