Jeunnesse Ourvrier Chretienne. Josist is what it's ordinarily called. Young Christian Workers, that's what it is. There are other young Christian groups--doctors, physicians, young Christian lawyers, young Christian architects, I don't know of there are young Christian businessmen, but every profession is represented in this Josist movement. It's very impressive. There's some of it in France, but the origin of it was in Belgium and it was very strong in Belgium.

I thought--though I couldn't examine it in great detail-- that it had a very respectable position in society. Also, you remember, in Belgium the Christian Trade Unions are on equal footing with what's called the regular trade unions, or the Socialist Trade Unions, as they call them. Originally the trade union movement was, I guess, a movement of socialists. They were called Socialist Unions. That was what they were named, not in England, but in the European countries. There was considerable opposition to them--a good deal, on the part of most people. They were supposed to be, well, godless and so forth.

Then the Christian unionists arose--the Christian Trade Unions--which have been a problem in many ways, but in Belgium there were more members of the Christian Trade Unions than there were members of the regular or Socialist Trade Unions. The same is true in France now. There are more members of the
