style when I was there. I mean, the Belgians will stick by each other when there's an outside occupier or invader, but that's that.

Now, there were some Flemings, of course--Huysmans is a Fleming; martens is a Fleming, and a number of others--who are strong believers in what they call the “regular” trade union movement, and who did not belong to the Christian Trade Union movement. But the trouble in Belgium is really the clash between the Flemings and the Walloons. Now, years ago, when I was in Belgium a good deal for a while--I was there frequently for a couple of years--and too young to fully understand everything--the Flemings were the minority party, and they were a kind of a downtrodden group. They didn't matter so much. I mean, you were aware of them. They didn't speak any language that anybody could understand. They spoke Flemish. That's a very difficult language, and they didn't speak anything else, and they were the servants everywhere--they were that kind of a group, you see.

But in the forty or fifty years that have passed since that time, the Flemings have increased in population. The Church had given them education. They had leaped forward in great numbers, and were a large element in the population, and now outnumbered the Walloons very considerably. So that in any tight election, the Flemings practically always win.
