Anyhow, we landed, and they were all right and cheerful. They went off the ship, you know, looking quite natty, when we got into the Port of New York.

Now, do you want to shift up to the I.L.O. Convention of 1952? That was the next one which you attended, wasn't it?

Yes. Well, of course I went out of office, you see. I was out of office, and in 152 the President appointed me again.

The 152 Conference, was, of course, a bird of a different stripe. The I.L.O. offices had been moved back to Geneva. They were back in their own building. They had their equipment and work arrangements all as It should be, and the staff were very happy. I've never seen the staff more happy to get back than they were to get back to Geneva. They had not really enjoyed their stay in Montreal too much. It was cold and bitter, and they'd had an awfully hard time getting houses and apartments to live in--you know, very difficult--and they were awfully glad to get back to Geneva where they mostly owned nice houses, or had good apartments they could get to--you know, knew how to live and could get some service, which is what the great trouble in Montreal was. They couldn't get anybody to do housework for them. And everything was going very smoothly.
