It was a very interesting reunion. I hadn't been there since 145, and it was now 152. There were a great many of the old friends, old acquaintances, of the I.L.O. still there. I don't remember much about it. I worked terribly hard. I was a Chairman. Well, this was natural, when I arrived people were very glad to see me and on the opening day, many of the speakers, and certainly the President of the Conference, made references to the fact that I was present on the floor, and that Leon Jouhaux was present on the floor, and that Pere Wallen was present on the floor, Sir Forbes Watson was present on the floor. There was a great deal of applause at my being present on the floor, because I hadn't been there, and due to the change in the Administration, many of them had thought I'd never be there again, you see. So they expressed themselves very warmly at my presence there again, and made very complimentary remarks at which the United States delegation all rose and bowed, you know. Very ceremonial, the whole business is. You have to meet the European pattern, you know. We all rose and bowed, and they applauded. It was all very pleasant and very nice.

Then the Committee on Committees and so forth approached me to ask me if I would undertake to be the Chairman of the Committee on the Chemical Industries. This was its first session, and under the rules, you see, no resolution can be voted on until its been through two sessions.
