I took Susanna. Other people had their wives there, sometimes their children, if they wanted to, and the ballroom was full. I mean, there were as many as could comfortably be seated in it.

I think the services in the White House were about eleven o'clock, half past eleven, something like that. Then we went in the early afternoon, two o'clock in the afternoon, or half past one, we left. The train left. They'd taken the body to the train, and the train left by night. We were going to go by night and would arrive in the morning. It couldn't have been as early as one o'clock. It must have been later than that.

Anyhow, we went to the train, got our compartments, and settled down. The most beautiful part of the funeral was at Hyde park. Really, it was very touching. Of course, there were a large number of people--a Congressional delegation, a Senatorial delegation, the full Cabinet.

Now, you must have talked to somebody on the way up.

Yes I did, but I don't remember. I don't recall. At this moment, I don't recall any special conversation with anybody. I was--you know--pretty thoughtful about these things.
