Poland. This was not Jews alorie, it was Poles of all kinds who were hanged at the door, hanged by their necks in front of their doors, or on the telephone poles of the street. I remember the delegates who got here by the underground in '41 brought these pictures with them from Poland, you know. They were just horrible sights.

Well, that kind of thing, you see, had been going on in Europe for a long time, and had built up this dreadful revolt in the minds and stomachs of the American people. They had conceived a loathing of this whole situation which was very hard for them to endure, and that's why VE Day seemed to be the end of that horror.

They were aware that the War in Japan was still going on, and they were warned against making a public celebration. We were told we mustn't have a public celebration, because after all our men were dying in the Pacific, and the whole Oriental situation was at least as bad or worse than ever. But at least there was the sense that we could now cope with this thing in the Far East. When we'd been fighting on two fronts, it was no joke, you know; to fight in Europe and to fight in the Far East was a very difficult problem. Now there was the sense that we could cope with that, and a great relief. I seem to remember a great deal of rejoicing and relief and sort of weeping on each other's shoulders in gratitude
