Then, of course, when the announcement was made, that was that. I at once sent a wire to Mr. Schwellenbach, wrote him the appropriate letters, offered my cooperation and so forth, and asked him would he let me know when he was coming East to be sworn in. I began to feel very queer about him, to tell you the truth, because he was not nice. He did not act like a nice man. He wasn't even polite to me. He didn't know how to behave. We couldn't make out what he was doing. I mean, I was a Democrat, I wasn't an enemy. If it had been a Republican taking over the office, I might have understood it--that there was party enmity--although, as far as I was concerned, there wouldn't have been that. I would have been delighted to hand my office over to a Republican. Not delighted, but I would have handed it over with respectful rites and ceremonies, and have cooperated with him about telling him about this that was pending and that that was pending and something else that was pending, bringing him up-to date and introducing him to various people.
