know how many, but a good many, running up into the hundreds--have gotten into the Government who have been leading a double life, and playing a double role. They belong to all kinds of organizations. Some of them are Communist, some of them are pretty Fascist, and it's a very serious matter. It's going to be dreadful.

The theory is that we've got to go at it in a systematic way. It's not a question of firing one man here and another man there, as they are found out, but off having a systematic canvass of the people of the Government to find out what their background is with regard to some of these more radical ideas that have now come to be thought of as a source of danger to the United States. I was thinking, “What radical ideas, Mr. Mitchell? Just what are these boys talking about? Because, what's a radical idea? It's one that goes to the root of the matter. Some of those things would be very good. What's the matter with it? Is it a question really of any of them betraying their country?”

“Oh, I don't know that,” he said, “but it was pretty alarning.”

Did he give me any details? Well, he hadn't been given any details. It was more than a lot of fear. They had some materials and they had some proof. They didn't disclose to the Committee, ever, the names of people.
