2003 First-Year MFA Exhibition

April 10–April 19, 2003

An exhibition of photographs, prints, paintings, sculptures and videos made by 24 first-year graduate students in the Visual Arts Division of Columbia University's School of the Arts will be on view at Columbia's Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery from Wednesday, April 10, through Sunday, April 19.

The group of young artists showing new work includes: Doug Bennett, Jonathan Bogarin, Noah Fischer, Elizabeth Gray, Jose Guinto, Fabienne Laserre, Nicola Lopez, Molly Smith, Meagan Pflug, Matt Keegan, Jamie Isenstein, Anna Craycroft, Rachel Foullon, Justin Lowe, Tanyth Berkeley, Ohad Meromi, Ivan Orkeny, Fiona Gardner, Chrity Gast, Mika Roftenberg, Will Kwan, Richard la Barbera, Laura Kleger, and Laleh Khorramian. Lia Gangitano, Founding Director of Participant Inc. and former curator at Thread Waxing Space, New York, will serve as curator.

The exhibition opens on Thursday, April 10, and will remain on view through Sunday, April 19. An opening reception will be held April 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The curator will give a gallery tour and talk Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m.

The Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University is located in Schermerhorn Hall, 8th Floor, at 118th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Special gallery hours for this exhibition are Monday through Saturday, from 1 to 5 p.m. The exhibition and curator's talk are free and open to the public. The Visual Arts Division of Columbia University's School of the Arts has trained some of today's most intriguing young contemporary artists, including Banks Violette, Tim Gardner, Sue de Beer and George Rush. Under the leadership of its chair, Jon Kessler, the faculty, including, Archie Rand, Tomas Vu-Daniel, Tom Roma, Coco Fusco, Kara Walker, Dana Hoey and Rirkrit Tiravanija, encourages experimentation and fosters the individual growth of its students through a wide range of visual media.
