Conference Objectives
The purpose of this Conference is to:
- Provide current, useful information focusing on the importance of privacy and confidentiality; underlying principles, and other emergent, ethical, legal, and policy implications; threats to privacy (individual, family, group, potential/real harms); historical examples of privacy violations.
- Present issues related to privacy and confidentiality including HIPAA provisions as they apply to physicians, researchers, IRB members, and IRB administrators, and propose strategies for implementing HIPAA in the research sphere.
- Describe the range of conflicts (financial and non-financial), how they can impact on research and research participants, and present novel strategies that can be used to identify, manage, and reduce conflicts that involve individuals, IRBs, and institutions.
- Impart information on the importance of privacy and confidentiality and conflicts of interest as they relate to vulnerable populations. Impress upon the research community the need to be sensitized to how fears of harm due to breaches of confidentiality may express themselves differently across diverse groups and present strategies to increase effective communication among researchers and members of a diverse community.
- Present the ethical issues that pertain to students and trainees serving as research subjects.
- Furnish essential information to those who oversee students and trainees who are learning to conduct research studies
- Furnish those who mentor or plan to mentor students with essential information that will assist them in providing more effective guidance.
- Provide educational and resource materials that will enable attendees and others to access key information, regulations and guidelines, and to apply principles to their work in an ongoing responsible and ethical manner.
