Glossary of Acronyms – Chad Oil Case Study

ATCA:  Alien Tort Claims Act, adopted in 1789 as part of the original Judiciary Act. In its original form, it made no assertion about legal rights; it simply asserted that "[t]he district courts shall have original jurisdiction of any civil action by an alien for a tort only, committed in violation of the law of nations or a treaty of the United States

EA:  Environmental Assessment. Planning, analysis and risk management planning documentation prepared for the oil and pipeline project based on World Bank criteria. 

ICCPR:  International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (international human rights treaty)

ICESR:  International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.  International human rights treaty.

IMF:  International Monetary Fund.  Assists governments in their macro economic and international financial capital flows.

RMP:  Revenue Management Plan. Document prepared by the government of Chad to guide and administer the distribution of oil revenues. This document was signed into law by the President of Chad in January 1999. 

UN: United Nations (world political body comprised of 189 member states)
