Read Interview (Economic Times, 17 May 2013) Arvind Panagariya, a professor of Indian economics at Columbia University, hits out at Nobel laureate and Harvard University professor Amartya Sen over his call to confront MPs with the "number of deaths" a delayed Food Security Bill can cause. The former chief economist at the Asian Development Bank counters Sen's argument that it is high social spending that has contributed to the economic growth of Asian economies such as Japan, Singapore, China, etc. Panagariya says there are no "systematic empirical studies that support the hypothesis". He also attacks Sen's long-standing arguments about the "Kerala experience". Edited excerpts from an interview with Ullekh NP.

Read Interview (Business World, 31 Jul 2013) Arvind Panagariya, the 60-year-old professor of economics at Columbia University, New York, has been in the US for 38 years. The Padma Bhushan awardee has also done stints with the World Bank and held the position of chief economist at the Asian Development Bank. But for the past five to six years, his focus has been India. In 2008, he wrote his first book, India: The Emerging Giant. For the past three years, he has been working on a five-book series on Indian economic policy for Oxford University Press. Two of these are out and three are on their way. He spoke to BW’s Anjuli Bhargava on his latest book, India’s Tryst With Destiny.

His latest book, "India's Tryst with Destiny: Debunking Myths that Undermine Progress and Addressing New Challenges", which he has co-authored with Arvind Panagariya, a professor of Indian economics at Columbia University, argues that growth can reduce poverty and that slow economic growth will hurt social development. In a joint response to questions from ET, the authors dwell on the message in their book, revive the Kerala Model vs Gujarat debate and attack economists such as Nobel laureate Amartya Sen for his "anti-growth assertions".
