STUTTGART, den 27. Juni. 1906.

Herrn Dr. Heinrich Schenker, Wien IX. [sic]

Sehr geehrter Herr!

Wir bestätigen dankend den Empfang Ihrer gefl. Zuschrift vom 25. d.

Dr. Heinrich Schenker, Vienna IX [sic]

Dear Sir,

We gratefully acknowledge receipt of your est’d letter of the 25th inst2 and request you kindly to deal with the proofs still in your hands and return them at the earliest possible opportunity so that as the gatherings are printed, type will be freed up.3

As regards the supplying of music examples, the setting of these has proved to require a further few weeks, since the difficulty of the work was unfortunately somewhat underestimated. Moreover, it is inadvisable to tie up our relatively small stock of note type-forms4 by setting the music examples in their entirety, since otherwise a situation could arise in which subsequent additions of notes {verso} in the proofs could not be made for lack of type-forms, and this might result in the progress of the printing process being disrupted.

We will be at pains to hasten the setting as much as possible, and remain

With kind regards,
[ sign’d: ] Heirs of J. G. Cotta’s Bookdealership

3 See note to CA 29: it is likely that Cotta are referring here to page proofs with letterpress and music examples intermingled, in which case “type” (Schrift) probably refers to the music examples.

4 The music examples in Harmonielehre are set in single-process moveable type, not engraved; hence, they are made up of numerous minute components (Notenschrift) fitted together, of which a printer had only a finite stock.
