Sehr geehrter Herr!

Nach Eintreffen Ihres Manuskripts ”Neue musikalische Theorien und Phantasien von einem Künstler,” für dessen gef. Übersendung wir Ihnen bestens danken,² haben wir uns mit der Angelegenheit eingehen[d] beschäftigt und sind nun in der Lage, Ihnen mitzuteilen, daß wir zur Übernahme des Kommissionsverlages gerne bereit sind. Die Bedingungen, welche wir Ihnen vorschlagen, haben wir in dem anliegenden Entwurf eines Verlagsvertrags niedergelegt.

{2} Wir bemerken zu dessen Ergänzung, daß die Ihnen nach § 3 obliegende Zahlung etwa M: 3100.– betragen dürfte.³ Diese Ziffer beruht indessen nur auf einer ganz ungefähren Schätzung, da Ihr Manukript einer genauen Berechnung erhebliche Schwierigkeiten bereitet; die Druckerei veranschlagt den Umfang auf etwa 25 Druckbogen, wozu nach Ihrem gef. Schreiben vom 22. d. M.⁵ noch ein Nachwort von einem Bogen kommen wird.⁴ Ihre Einnahme bei Verkauf der Auflage würde – ebenfalls nach vorläufiger Schätzung – etwa M: 5250.– betragen; Ihre Zahlung bei Erscheinen des Buches also um M: 2150.– übersteigen. Bei all diesen Ziffern müssen wir, wie gesagt, {3} den Vorbehalt machen, daß das schließliche Ergebnis von der Schätzung mehr oder weniger abweichen wird.

Ihrer gef. Rückäußerung auf unsere obigen Vorschläge mit Interesse entgegensehend, zeichnen wir

Dear Sir,

Since the arrival of your manuscript “New Musical Theories and Fantasies, by an Artist,” for the dispatching of which our grateful thanks,² we have investigated the matter thoroughly, and can now inform you that we are happily prepared to take on the commissioning publication. We have set down the conditions that we propose to you in the enclosed draft of a publishing contract.

{2} In addition to this, we note that the payment incumbent on you according to clause 3 ought to amount to about 3,100.– Marks.³ This figure is however based only an entirely approximate estimate, since your manuscript presents considerable difficulties for precise calculation. The printers estimate the extent as 25 gatherings,⁴ with an Afterword of one gathering still to come, according to your kind letter of the 22nd inst.⁵ Your takings upon sale of the edition would—at any rate, on the basis of a provisional estimate—amount to around 5,252 Marks. With all of these figures we must, as said before, {3} add the proviso that the final yield will vary above or below the estimate.
