Hochwohlgeboren
Herren Professor Dr. Heinrich Schenker,

Sehr geehrter Herr Professor !

ergebenst
[ sign’d: ] Emil Hertzka

Dear Professor,

Your esteemed letter of the 23rd inst drives me to despair.

Two-thirds of the edition went on its way to Leipzig three days ago in two crates, and would have to be transported back here if we were to make the corrections. The transport costs, as well as the costs of pasting over are as you might imagine considerable, and furthermore the process would be so extremely laborious that I cannot opt for this method of correction.

If you really do think that the very2 small, albeit confusing error { left } must be belatedly corrected, then we would have to add a whole page to the volume. This page would contain nothing but the comment that the following music example belongs in place of Fig. 89 on p.64. I would then print as many copies of this page as we have printed of the volume, and would have this page inserted into each volume [either] between the Foreword and the Introduction, or before the Table of Contents.3

By the same post you will be receiving three further complimentary copies. I remain

With kind regards,
Yours very truly,
[ sign’d: ] Emil Hertzka

FOOTNOTES:

1 Kosovsky, Finding List has "August 24"; however, in WSLB !16, of August 26, Schenker answers this letter as of "yesterday."

2 "dieser" has been overtyped to read "der sehr" (i.e. "this" changed to 'the very").

3 Fig. 89 on p.64 comprises five short melodic excerpts from Haydn sonatas and a string quartet, and appeared in the 1st edition on p.37. I have yet to find a copy of the 2nd edition that contains either a paste-over for this example or an inserted erratum slip. I should be most interested to hear from any reader who knows of a copy corresponding in any way to the discussion in this letter.

SUMMARY:
[ Ornamentik:] Acks non-extant letter of 23rd reporting problem with Fig. 89 on p.64. Discusses options of pasting over a new example, or inserting an corrigendum slip. 2/3rds of edition is now in transit.
