Sehr geehrter Herr Doktor !

hochachtungsvoll

Dear Doctor,

The firm of Breitkopf & Härtel, by whom your book Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is being printed, has written to us as follows: “We should not let this opportunity go by without making you aware that there are no key-signatures in the music examples in this work. These key-signatures may well have been omitted deliberately, but it would perhaps be as well if you were just to draw this to the attention of the author.”1

We respectfully request your answer at the earliest opportunity, and remain,

With kind regards,
[stamp:] Universal Edition & Co.
[sign’d:] Hertzka

FOOTNOTES

1 Examples such as those on pp.21–23 do not have key-signatures because they are transcribed from Beethoven’s sketchbooks, which generally lacks signatures. See S’s response, WSLB 87, Dercember 3, 1911.

SUMMARY
The printer reports that music examples for Beethovens Neunte Sinfonie lack signatures.
