[UE stamp:] Erledigt

Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor !

Dear Director,

Many thanks for delivery of the first galley-proofs,1 which really did occur in the month of November. Allow me to bring you a little cheer with the final passage, or rather the postcript, of the enclosed letter from d’Albert.2

When you return the letter, please also enclose the book Grove,3 which I sent you last year to serve as a model.

With kind regards,
Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker

Grove is indispensable for correcting the proofs.

FOOTNOTES

1 No covering note or delivery slip from this package of proofs is known to have survived.

2 Presumably a letter in OJ 9/6 dated November 27, 1911, of which the PS reads: “Von Ihrer Ausgabe der chromatischen Fantasie bin ich entzückt!“ (I am over the moon about your edition of the Chromatic Fantasy). Click on Eugen d’Albert.

3 S had previously referred to Sir George Grove’s Beethoven and His Nine Symphonies (London: Novello, 1896), of which he possessed a copy of the German translation by Max Hehmann (London 1906) (see Musik und Theater, enthaltend die Bibliothek des Herrn Dr. Heinrich Schenker, Wien (Vienna: Antiquariat Heinrich Hinterberger, n.d.), item 40), in WSLB 47, November 9, 1909, and WSLB 77, June 21, 1911. Since S was dismissive of the book, this reference, including the PS, may be ironic.
