Sehr verehrter Herr Doktor!

Zunächst herzlichen Dank für Ihre liebe Karte.¹ Oppel² u. Vrieslander³ haben das Exemplar längst erhalten. Auch Prof. Altmann⁴ habe ich gleich geschrieben.

Die Hefte⁵ sind natürlich als eine größere Reihe gedacht (Hoffentlich!). Ich bin aber davon abgekommen, das erste Heft ausschließlich als Chopin Heft zu bringen – ich denke, “gemischte Kost” wäre doch besser. –⁶

Nun ein große Bitte: Soeben kommt Herr Wolf⁷ aus Hamburg zu mir mit der betrübenden Mitteilung, daß ihm die Einreise nach Österreich verweigert worden sei!! Er dachte, daß vielleicht Furtwängler⁸ da helfen könnte – für ausgeschlossen {2} halte ich es nicht; ich schreibe ihm jedenfalls sofort und hoffe am Donnerstag, wo ich ihn in der Probe sehe, schon etwas zu erfahren.

Viel eindringlicher wäre es aber vielleicht, wenn Sie selbst, verehrter Herr Doktor, Furtw. sogleich einen dementsprechenden, nachdrücklichen Brief schreiben würden, daß er sich der Sache annähme. Vor allem, daß dieses Studium für Herrn Wolf einfach unersetzlich ist! – Fur heute verbleibe ich mit besten Wünschen und herzlichtes Grüßen

Sehr geehrter Herr Prf. Schenker!

Herr Dr. Jonas war so liebenswürdig die Sache für mich in die Hand zu nehmen, es ist nichts dazu zu ergänzen. Mir wurde der Bescheid gegeben, daß {3} ich erst wieder nach Österreich käme, wenn die Sperre aufgehoben sei. Ich wünschte ich wäre garnicht erst von Wien weggefahren. Wenn Dr. Furtwängler hier nichts erreicht, weiß ich noch nicht, wer mich darüber trösten soll. Entschuldigen Sie, daß ich Sie mit dieser Sache belästigen muß.

Dear Doctor,

First of all, warmest thanks for your nice card.¹ Oppel² and Vrieslander³ have long since received copies. And I have written immediately to Prof. Altmann.⁴

The issues⁵ are naturally envisioned as a larger series (one hopes!). I have, however, reconsidered presenting the first issue as an exclusively Chopin issue—I think “Mixed Fare” would be better.

Now a large request: Mr. Wolf⁶ has just come from Hamburg with the distressing news that his entry into Austria has been delayed!! He thought that perhaps Furtwängler⁷ would be able to help with that—{2} it seems to me not out of the question; in any case I shall write him immediately and hope to learn something already on Thursday, when I will see him at the rehearsal.

But it would be perhaps much more impressive, esteemed doctor, if you yourself were at once to write Furtwängler an appropriate letter asking him to take up the matter. Above all [to affirm] that there simply can be no substitute for this course of study for Mr. Wolf!

Dear Prof. Schenker,

Dr. Jonas was so kind as to intervene for me in this matter, there is nothing further to add. The decision has been handed down to me that I can return to Austria only when the barriers are removed. I wished I had never left Vienna in the first place. If Dr. Furtwängler has no success here, I do not know who will be able to comfort me. Forgive me that I must burden you with this matter.
