Handwritten letter from Jonas to Schenker, dated December 5, [1930]

5. XII [1930]
Sehr verehrter Herr Doktor!

Also nochmals meinen innigsten Dank und ergebensten
Gruß Ihr

Handwritten letter from Jonas to Schenker, dated December 5, [1930]

December 5[, 1930]
Dear Doctor,

My heartiest thanks for your amiable letter;1 I surely need not emphasize that my efforts will ever be directed toward justifying your generous confidence. As I have already mentioned in my previous letter, what I would like is to have at hand an authorization for here; perhaps to the effect that I first of all studied with you and then with your competent student Dr. Weisse,2 moreover have now completely assimilated the problems, whose crux, as you emphasize, I have rightly grasped, so that I am now in a position to introduce others to the essence of your teaching and its importance. If you permit, I will also occasionally allow myself to report to you about any successes and the progress of my affairs here.

It may perhaps interest you even today to hear that the circle around Edwin Fischer4 is very interested in Schenker, that the best student, Conrad Hansen,5 whom I have nearly befriended, plays the Beethoven sonatas and has them played only in your editions, and moreover promotes (at your instigation) only the Urtext editions (thereby forming an 'island' here, of course).

Thus once again my deepest thanks and most faithful greeting,
Yours,
[ sign’d:] Oswald Jonas
