Geehrter Herr Jonas!

Dear Mr. Jonas, My obligation toward students kept over from last year or those registered before you compels me to tell you that, to my deepest regret, I cannot be at your disposal this time. Besides the heavy teaching load there is the additional fact that presently no fewer than four works1 are in press at the printers Cotta and Vienna2, and they give me, as you may imagine, very much to do. What about trying some lessons with our [Felix] Hupka?3

Best greetings,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker

1 There are five works to which S could be referring here: Kontrapunkt II (Cotta, later transferred to UE, 1922, and already submitted); Die letzten fünf Sonaten Beethovens ... Op.101 (UE, 1920, though it may have been published by this date); Die kleine Bibliothek = Tonwille 1 (Tonwille-Flugblätterverlag, 1921); the first volume of L. van Beethoven: Klaviersonaten (UE, 1921–23); L. van Beethoven: Sonata op. 27, n. 2 (Die sogenannte Mondscheinsonate) (UE, 1921).

2 i.e. Tonwille-Flugblätterverlag = A. J. Gutmann = Universal Edition.

3 Hupka had been a pupil of S since at least as early as 1912 (OC 3/1–). J in fact took lessons with Hans Weisse.

S is unable to give J lessons, and suggests Felix Hupka.
