Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor !

Inzwischen erhielt ich von befreundeter Seite aus München den Aufsatz Halm’s (noch als „Fahne“),¹ mußte ihn aber auch gleich zurückschicken. Ob er schon erschienen, ist dem Absender selbst noch nicht bekannt. Der Aufsatz übertrifft Alles bisher Geschriebene, wovon Sie sich bald wohl auch selbst überzeugen werden,– eine imponierende Überraschung, weniger für mich selbst, der die Zukunft noch schöner sieht, als für die Anderen. Es ist also überflussig, daß Sie sich später noch die Mühe nehmen, den Aufsatz (den ich eben schon kenne) mir zuzusenden.² Für die gute Absicht indessen meinen besten Dank.

Dear Director,

Meanwhile I have obtained from a friendly quarter in Munich the article by Halm (still in proof),¹ although I had to return it immediately. Whether or not it has yet appeared is unknown to the sender himself. The article outstrips everything that has been written hitherto, as you yourself will surely very quickly become convinced—an impressive surprise, less for me myself than for other people, since I see the future as even more rosy. It will not therefore be necessary for you later to go to the trouble of sending me the article (with which I am now already acquainted).² My warmest thanks for your good intentions in the meanwhile.

¹ Perhaps August Halm, “Heinrich Schenker,” Die Freie Schulgemeinde, October 1, 1917, preserved in S’s scrapbook, OC 2/p.53 (though it is there described as a „biographical essay“, whereas S portrays it as a review of LfS). S had requested this twice previously (WSLB 288, July 8; WSLB 289, November 30, 1917).

² In a letter to August Halm, OC 1/B 25–28 (draft)=DLA 69.930/2, January 17, 1918, S states: “At the end of December, your issue reached me from my publisher (needless to say without any expression of shared pleasure) ...”

SUMMARY:
