Handwritten letter from Schenker to Hertzka (UE), dated March 12, 1910

Sehr geehrter Herr Dirtektor!

Dear Director,

With most grateful thanks, I am sending herewith the Handel score that your letter of today asks to have back.1

I take this opportunity also to ask (as I did once before, prior to Christmas2) whether I could not have the proofs for correction over the Easter period. So many pupils are away for the holidays that it would be eminently possible for me take care of the proofs under most convenient conditions. And why should I not for once be the one to press the publisher who pressed me so cruelly last Summer and Fall? That I even ask at all is the result of your having actually given me your word4 that the manuscript would be going to the printers at the beginning of March. So please kindly let me know if I can expect the proofs over Easter: I should like to {verso} make preparations for them well in advance.

With kind regards,
Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker

FOOTNOTES:

1 The score of the Handel organ concertos on the basis of which S worked when making his four-hand arrangement, and for which S had asked in WSLB 44, October 18, 1909, in which he informed H that one of those works would be included in the Bopp historical concert. H replied in OC 52/40, October 20, and had evidently sent it to S in the meantime. H asks for it in OC 52/46, March 11.

2 In WSLB 49, December 20, 1909; H replied negatively in OC 52/44, December 21, 1909; the March notification appears in OC 52/45, February 11, 1910.

3 Ringbinder punch-hole obscures “rum.”

4 S’s wording here turns into a promise ("weil Sie ja Ihr Wort mir geben, daß das Mnspt Anfang März in die Druckerei gehen soll") what was not quite present in the original ("Ihre Chromatische Phantasie geht anfangs März, wie bereits erwähnt, zum Stich und wird noch im Frühjahr herauskommen.").
