Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor !

Dear Director,

To be sure, I have the feeling that this time (according to your latest letter1) you are really in earnest. All the same, I will not shrink from impressing upon you once more that it really is as I said. That is, I think we will need all of 2 months for the proofs, and that we could settle matters [by] when the printers begin their work. Otherwise, the date of publication could hardly be expected to be before mid- or late-October, since I leave on July 1 and do not get back here until the beginning of my teaching term (October 1). And last of all, quite apart from all calculations of time, I would also like to urge more emphatically upon you that you show aesthetic appreciation for my work: we happen to live in Vienna, where on the day after the appearance of a work such as this, all those who up until then have shown no sign of knowing these things either by word and in writing or through performance and other means—and what is more have, and I can prove this, put out ideas that are precisely the opposite and false—suddenly “have known all along” what it says; and yet, despite this, {recto} I do not waver in renewing my recommendation to you to devote more vigorous attention to my work.

And now, with my best wishes,
Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker
