Answers to Extra Credit Questions

Fall Semester, 2019

Imagine that Helmholtz, von Uexküll, and Descartes land in New York for a couple of days, and want you to help them get the feel of life here. They don’t want to see the Time-Warner Center because they agree, it makes them “feel like they are at the mall in Costa Mesa.” Would you take them to the High Line? Sylvia’s? Coney Island? Where is the real New York?

Highline

I would take them to a bodega in Brooklyn

Coney Island, that’s the heart of Brooklyn!

I would take them on a journey of the NYC subway. This is so we can observe the real New York wildlife. I’m leaning towards the F train since there is ALWAYS something (someone?) running crazily. Then might take them for a drink afterwards.

I think I would take them to the Top of the Rock so they could see the entirety of the city from above and maybe even have some engaging conversations on what their senses are telling them about the incredible view. I would also take them to Central Park because it’s my favorite place in the city (and who knows maybe von Euxkull will see some ticks in the grass).

I’d take them to the Lower East Side & Greenwich Village & Chelsea because there’s so much good food and diversity there. Good bars too (I’m 21).

I would take them to the Whitney, then the highline, then Chelsea Market. I’d also being them to the Hungarian Pastry Shop.

First, we would hang out at my apt simply b/c I’m lazy and a bad host. I would take them to Papaya Dog in the UWS and eat in the park. Then I’d take them to a beer garden and trade tales. The “real New York” is all of New York!

The Whitney Museum and the Highline; Katz’s Deli and the Tenement; Central Park (Reservoir), the Dakota, and Carmine’s; Columbia University, Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and The Hungarian (ALL IN ONE DAY/NIGHT)

Greenwich Village & Chinatown

Riverside Park on a Tuesday morning

I would take them to the High Line, Chelsea Market, & the Whitney Museum.

Lincoln Center

First to College Walk bridge to show them the line down Amsterdam. Then take them to a Broadway show, the chaos that is Times Square, end with a walk by the piers.

I would probably take them downtown to the Oculus & the parks around there. I’ve always loved that area—it feels so underrated.

I would take them to the Staten Island Ferry so that they could see the Statue of Liberty for free. Then, we would all get pizza.

First of all, thank you for visiting. Not that this is “the real New York,” but I think Helmholtz, von Euxkull, and Descartes would have a great time at the Museum of Illusions. After the museum I would take them on a nice walk through Central Park, and then take the subway to Chinatown for dinner. This might be overwhelming for that particular trio, but it would be fascinating to me.

I would take them to Prospect Park in Brooklyn because it’s a beautiful park with elements of New York (mainly, the cool people in the park). I think it encompasses both the hustle and beauty of New York. Also, I think Descartes would be overwhelmed in a busy place in New York. If he started questioning his existence in front of his fireplace who knows what would happen if you took him to Times Square.

I would take them to Hudson Yards to the new structure there so they can be up with the times.

Katz Deli

Lower East Side! We could eat knishes in Tompkins Square Park and visit the Tenement Museum.

High Line is the real New York.

Rockefeller Center (stimulates visual system); Favorite restaurant (stimulate taste buds)

If I wanted to show them NY, I might take them to the High Line. However, I would rather take them to Coney Island because I’d like to see those three at Coney Island.

Hudson Yards (new copper structure)

Tompkins Square Park + Chinatown

Coney Island

I would take them shopping in Soho to modernize their wardrobes.

Empire State Building

Definitely Central Park

I would take them to East Harlem first to show the non-gentrified side of NYC- then take Citi Bikes to the Brooklyn Bridge.

I would take them to the top of the World Trade Center so they could see all of New York. Then I would take them to Russ + Daughters to get bagels! And then Patsy’s to get pizza. Finally, we would go to the MET and then Central Park.

The High Line (+ Chelsea Market)

I would take Helmholtz, von Euxkull, and Descartes to Times Square because the high traffic of people and things, like cars and lights, would probably make them want to study the perceptions of Times Square.

I would take them to Jazz bars, like Paris Blues and Blue NOTE. The real New York is in its diverse artistic accomplishments; we see this especially in the subways where there is 24/7 live music.

What is your favorite color?

Anything pastel

Beige or a nice periwinkle

Blue (6)

Blue (which utilizes S-cones). Peak is 454 nm.

Favorite spectral color = purple; favorite qualia = mustard yellow

Hunter green

It’s red

Lavender! And bright purple.

Lilac purple- calming

My favorite color changes, but currently it’s lemon

My favorite color is purple

My favorite color is purple, or violet on the visible spectrum

My favorite color is teal so I guess I would find wavelengths somewhere between short and medium particularly pleasing.

My favorite color is yellow, now that I know how confusing it is to learn about.

My favorite film color or surface color? Film, I’d say a nice green at about 543 nm. Surface, I’d say a nice pink on a cozy scarf.

Navy blue or blood orange

Periwinkle

Purple (2)

Red

Red (hue); mauve (surface color)

Scarlet/red or the turquoise color of the water in the Caribbean.

Silver (a non-spectrum color)!

Surface color (Actually, that’s false. I like violet.)

The film colour seen by looking at a white table through a red window (pink)

What sort of ecologically relevant visual forms trigger neurons in your inferotemporal cortex?

A lovely crown molding

An iphone

Big trees, pretty flowers!!!

Butterflies

Cats, trains

Circles i.e., pizza, donuts, frisbees

Corgis (or just dogs in general), plates (because that means food is coming), the outline of spiders, planes, plants

Crocs (the shoe) because my dad wears crocs everyday so when I see them I am reminded of him.

Curls

E.g., an apple when I am hungry, water when thirsty

Ecologically relevant visual forms that trigger neurons in my cortex might be the contour of my mother’s face, or the contour of a plate full of delicious dining hall food.

Evolutionarily programmed heterosexuality makes my visual neurons triggered by human male forms (unfortunately)

Face of mother

Faces  important for social interaction and survival (evolutionary explanation)

Faces and human hands trigger the neurons in my cortex.

Faces of people

Faces or food

Flowing water (ex: waterfalls)

If I had to take a stab and go out on a limb, I’d say my cortex is HIGHLY sensitive to cats, as a visual form.

If I see a hand coming towards my face, I always move away and flinch. I used to play basketball and volleyball so if I see convex or ball-like figures, I get ready to catch it or duck depending on my readiness.

Mostly pasta

Mozzarella sticks!

Neurons in my cortex respond to bagels and neuroscience textbooks.

People with angry looking faces

People!

Potentially trains would trigger neurons in my cortex; I live near a train track in my hometown in TX and take public transit here.

Silhouettes of humans.

Snakes trigger my sympathetic nervous system  just like Indiana Jones, I hate snakes.

Square shapes  representing books

The color green

The rug in this classroom

The shape of the coffee maker.

To hunter, the shape of a lion.

The silhouette of a dog: I have been known to get excited when mistaking furry clothing items or fast-moving small children in my periphery for dogs.

Things that have 6+ legs and the dim lighting in Milbank 328

Visual forms which comprise of favorite foods; visual form of Justin Bieber

Whenever I see mac and cheese I tend to feel a strong impulse from my cortex wherein I start to salivate and get excited. I love pasta and cheese.

The last time I saw a bat was in Kansas in 2007. It was in our house and my dad hit it with a tennis racket and it accidentally flew into my grandmother’s face. Oops. Don’t worry, she lived despite the bat contact.
