Course Reviews of Perception, Fall 2019

At the end of the Fall Term, 2019, the students in Perception reviewed the course. Among the questions that they answered was, “What would you like to tell a student who is planning to enroll in this course next year?” If you are thinking of enrolling in Perception in the Fall Term of 2020, you will be interested to see their replies. Ask a lot of questions in lecture or you will always leave feeling semi confused

Be encouraged to take lecture on its own. Basis for more advanced perception-based courses!

Be prepared to do a lot of reading outside of the class but you will enjoy the lectures a lot.

class attendance and deep studying is necessary

Come to class! It can be tempting to skip when we just go through a powerpoint, but Prof. Remez says a lot in class that isn't on there and it may not even make sense to look at the powerpoint without being in class for him to explain it.

Definitely attend lectures and if you are confused attend office hours.

Don't take this!!

Enjoy!

Enroll if you like silly humour, sometimes dry, sometimes very dad-like but in the best way. He cares about you like you're a real human being, too, especially during Office Hours and not just about your learning but about your wellbeing as a student.

I would say that they should take it but not save the material to the last minute to learn it.

I would tell them that it is an interesting course.

I would tell them that the course is engaging and a great example of you get out of it what you put into it

I would tell them to make sure to take in depth notes, follow along with the slides, and to do their best on the quizzes to help give them a boost

If you need it for your major, its fine

It's a great class

It's a great class and I highly recommend it. Sometimes the material is a lot, but it's all very interesting and Professor Remez really is flexible in giving his students every possible chance to succeed.

It's rare to find such a knowledgeable and passionate professor at Barnard, and Remez ranks among my favorite professors that I've had here. This was my favorite psychology class I've had at Barnard, and it is all thanks to Remez's engaging teaching style - I honestly am not super interested in the actual content of the class, but Remez's teaching style made it interesting and exciting. He also is incredible at answering questions. I had one question after class and he knew how to explain the concept - with a brand new analogy - instantly (and it completely answered my question!). I came to Barnard with the hope and expectation that I'd learn from exceptional professors,  and I found that in this class with Professor Remez. I also think it's clear that he really cares about and is interested in meeting his students - why else would he make it "required" to attend office hours at least once during the semester?

Leave enough time to study and attend ALL the lectures. Although the notes are online, Professor Remez is able to explain really complicated material much more easily than just reading off the textbook or slides later.

More technical than expected, but try it!

okay

Probably not to take it or to spend a lot of time on it outside of the course.

Professor Remez made what could have been an otherwise painfully dry, inhumanely technical subject engaging, personal, and even entertaining. I would recommend him to anyone who considers a dash of irreverence an essential ingredient of a good education. As for the subject matter, I now consider it essential knowledge--how have I lived for so many years in my body without understanding how it receives and processes information from the wider world? And how is psychophysics not central to all facets of psychology--theory and clinical practices included?

Reach out to Dr. Remez if you are having difficulties with understanding course material, staying on track, or general issues. He is very supportive and willing to help.

The class is very fair and the material is actually really interesting. Professor Remez is awesome and engaging.

Try and get ahead on the quizzes and readings, but not to stress too much about this course. If you stay organized, everything you need is posted online and you will be great.

Very interesting course! Professor Remez sometimes goes off on tangents in lecture, which some students find frustrating, but I personally felt that I learned a lot from both the lecture content and Professor Remez's side points. The course is not an 'easy A,' but it is graded fairly and it is possible to do very well if you put in the effort.

You will learn a lot about each sensory system! Aspects of philosophy and other sciences (physics) are incorporated. Successfully links the physical world to biological systems.
