4. Columbia Science Review Call for Articles

Columbia Science Review is a science publication that is printed once a semester with the goal to promote awareness and knowledge of science and technology. This vision may sound very broad for a student group to achieve, but CSR presents unique opportunities for student authors from Columbia University and its affiliate institutes. The background of the authors vary from 1st year undergraduate students to advanced students in Graduate School of Arts and Science, School of Journalism, and Columbia University Medical Center.

CSR is an open platform (meaning we accept articles on any topic related to math and science!) for student authors to present scientific articles written in an easily accessible and concise style with precise scientific integrity in content. Articles should be written in easy language so that minimal background knowledge is needed to understand them, especially because CSR is meant to be read by all Columbia community members from students to faculty members, humanities majors to astrophysicists.

The final deadline for articles for Columbia Science Review's Spring 2008 issue is March 30th. Articles can be about a range of topics, but must be related to math or science in some way and written for the general public. Please check our website for more details, or email csrinfo@columbia.edu with any questions.

--------------------------------------------------------------
5. Art of Community Campaign

The hotly rumored arts intiative springing from your undergraduate student councils is finally breaking out of its shell. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to artistically express yourself and Columbia!

The Art of Community Campaign
The Art of Community Campaign, started from the conversations and ideas of the CC'09 Class Council, is a month long effort to engage the community in answering the question of "What does it mean to be a part of Columbia?" Consisting of four unique events, the campaign aims to prompt dialogue in Columbians on what it means to be a part of our community. Supported and endorsed now by all four undergraduate councils, the Art of Community Campaign represents a united effort aimed to build our community through the use of its vibrant arts culture.

The Community Service (April 3rd; Low Memorial Library Plaza)
With this opening project of the Art of Community Campaign we're going to be working with the Double Discovery Center to involve the community beyond Columbia's gates. With shared canvas and paint, students and community youth will work together on Low Plaza to create an image of community. With food and t-shirts, we hope to draw a crowd and involve as many hands as possible in painting a picture of community.

The Variety Show (April 12th; Roone Arledge Auditorium)
Working with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions "Perspectives on Diversity" Weekend, the campaign is hosting a night of student performances to showcase the performance art culture of the Columbia Community. Student groups will perform in front of an audience of prospective and current students with a goal of creating a dynamic between current and future Columbians.

The Exhibit (April 19th-May 3rd; Low Memorial Library Rotunda)
Looking back on our vibrant history, we're working with the University Archives to create a historical exhibit examining how the Columbia Community has changed from its early days until now. Held in the Low Rotunda for two weeks, the exhibit will have an opening reception where student and alumni will be given the opportunity to talk about what Columbia means to them. We want to provide students with the tools to examine the present of Columbia in the context of its past.

The Art on the Steps (April 26th; Low Memorial Library Plaza)
This is a great event with which we're hoping to allow the community to really examine and expose itself to itself with its own art. Through various avenues we're going to be giving members of the Columbia Community the means to make a piece of art to express how they feel about Columbia. These masterpieces will then be collected and displayed as we plaster Low Steps to create a greater canvas for the entire community. The Plaza will really become a community gallery as the "Art on the Steps" is joined by other art acquired throughout the month long campaign and with the help of Tablet and the Postcrypt Art Gallery.

ACC Planning Committee meetings are every Sunday 6pm in the SGO, 5th floor Lerner. It's not too late join! Also, feel free to contact us with any questions or ideas!

This is an endeavor endorsed and supported by CCSC, ESC, SGA, GSSC, and the CPI.

9. CU SpeakOUT

My Zone is Safe to Talk about LGBTQ Issues.

Challenge homophobia and heterosexism on campus. Become a visible ally. Display the CU SpeakOUT symbol on campus.

Sign up online!

What is CU SpeakOUT?
CU SpeakOUT is an educational program that will cultivate a network of visible and supportive allies to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ) individuals and the LGBTQ community here at Columbia University. CU SpeakOUT members indicate their support by hanging a CU SpeakOUT sign or magnet on their residence hall or office door or by wearing a lapel pin, button, t-shirt, etc. This program is a component of the broader Office of Multicultural Affairs Diversity Education and Training programming that addresses multiple identities. CU SpeakOUT raises awareness about LGBTQ issues and concerns, while also developing communication and advocacy skills.

Why CU SpeakOUT?
In our spring 2007 assessment of the Columbia community, LGBTQ individuals reported that there is tolerance but not acceptance of LGBTQ concerns as well as a lack of visible safe space. Students also reported they were not able to find supportive staff and faculty and conversations and education were not occurring inside and outside of the classroom. This assessment and a number of recent campus studies have also reported that many potential allies do not know how to have conversations about LGBTQ concerns and often avoid the subject and even LGBTQ individuals for fear of being inadvertently homophobic. The New Member session is a direct response to this as it develops communication skills for LGBTQ allies while the public identification of allies will help provide visible safe space.

Most importantly, we would love your participation in this new program. We will be offering numerous sessions this spring.

Upcoming Sessions (Lunch/Dinner Provided):
April 3, 12-2:30pm
April 16, 7-9:30pm
April 21, 5-7:30pm
April 25, 12-2:30pm

STUDENT GROUP EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
********************************************************************************
1. Engineering Student Council Partnership Network

The Engineering Student Council Partnership Network was created in Fall 2005 to facilitate collaboration between engineering-related student groups, as well as provide support for these groups from the ESC to complement existing support from the various governing boards (ABC, SGB, CI, CSGB, IGC). There is currently an effort to revive the ESC Partnership Network, beginning with a compilation of resources to assist group leaders, and potentially a reception or other large meeting with all groups participating in the network.

The ESC is currently seeking input from engineering student groups regarding what resources would be most useful in the successful operation and management of these clubs. All suggestions and interested groups should events.cancer.org/RFLcolumbiauniversityNY. Then, recruit members from your club to join you in the fight against
cancer. We would love to have your group join us this year in another amazing event with live performances, on-site activities, and amazing prizes.

Here is how to do it:
1) Go to the website events.cancer.org/RFLcolumbiauniversityNY

These photos can be ones that you submit to us, or we have photographers who can come to events or meetings to take the photos. IN ORDER TO BE REPRESENTED IN THE BOOK, WE NEED THESE PHOTOS ASAP! Our deadlines have been changed and this section will be submitted much sooner than anticipated.

If you already have photos you'd like to submit, please submit them to CUyearbookphotos@gmail.com. Please include your club name in the email. If you need a staff photographer to come take a photo, please contact Cliff Massey.

9. Host an Event with the Society for Professional Journalist

My name is Karen Zraick. I'm a grad student in the journalism school and a board member of Society for Professional Journalists (SPJ) there. I'm also the Columbia University Liaison for the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. http://www.pulitzercenter.org/

I'm writing to find out if you'd be interested in planning an event with SPJ and the Pulitzer Center. I would love to do an event in mid-April with Kelly Hearn, a reporter just back from reporting on oil, politics and the environment in Peru for the Washington Post and other outlets. (More info & links to video below.)

I'd like to propose Kelly Hearn, our reporter just back from Peru, who is based in DC. His reporting project "Peru's Petroleum Play: Amazon Oil and Politics" includes two video documentaries – both of which aired on Foreign Exchange – produced by Lone OutPost, Inc. in association with Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, and articles in The Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, and The Virginia Quarterly Review.

"Peru's Petroleum Play: Amazon Oil and Politics" is about Occidental Petroleum's giant oil operation in Peru and how a group of indigenous Peruvians has filed a class action lawsuit in the United States, charging Occidental with contaminating their environment. The Washington Post article quickly rose to become one of the top read World stories on the Post's website.

For more from Kelly Hearn on his reporting project, "Peru's Petroleum Play: Amazon Oil and Politics", visit his project page here, sponsored by the Pulitzer Center: http://www.pulitzercenter.org/showproject.cfm?id=32.

Thanks, we look forward to hearing from someone.

Thursday, March 6th, 6-7:45, James Room, Barnard Hall, FREE DINNER
Presented by Student Government Association and Office of Civic Engagement, Please RSVP to townhallbarnardcollege@gmail.com. 2. What strategies are and are not effective in campus activism?
3. What is the role of Barnard students in activism based at Columbia?
4. Who participates in campus activism? Who does not?
5. How can the College – the administration and the student government – better gauge student sentiment?
