Wingate couldn't do it.

Q:

Well, as a matter of fact, wasn't that one of Adam's difficulties as the years went on, that he really didn't want to get into the mechanics of running an organization?

Clark:

At any time, he didn't. Adam never had a political machine in the usual sense. He never devoted the time to that. But he had so much charisma, and his church, that he didn't need the usual form of political machine.

Q:

And of course, when Ray Jones set up a political organization which could have been run -- wasn't it true that Ray really envisioned his doing that, running the political organization, while Adam was out in front --

Clark:

-- absolutely --

Q:

-- as the dramatic candiate?

Clark:

Absolutely. But Adam couldn't even stand that amount of potential competition over it.

Q:

Incidentally, did you ever know Louis Martin?

Clark:

Sure.

Q:

Did you ever discuss Adam with Louis Martin?

Clark:

Of course. And Ray, we'd frequently discuss Ray. And Ray.
