Q:

Did you consider Adam Powell had a high degree of native intelligence, developed intellect?

Clark:

Yes. Yes, I would say so. Yes.

Q:

Why in the world would he make --

Clark:

-- I don't know --

Q:

-- especially the second mistake, the Bag Lady mistake?

Clark:

I don't know why he made that error, except he became over- confident. That's the only way I could ever explain it. He was just over-confident.

Q:

Was it over-confidence or was it arrogance?

Clark:

Well, there's a little bit of arrogance in over-confidence, right? They're almost the same thing.

Q:

Or, to be a little psychologic al about it, did he have a big of paranoia? .... I think I had turned the machine off before you started to answer that question, about whether or not there might be a little paranoia, in the sense of gra ndeur, in Adam Powell?

Clark:

Oh, I think so, yes. But it wasn't unusual, you know, for someone in his position, I don't think. That wasn't unusual.

Q:

In other words, no more than would be normal for any leader who goes out to get the vote, and has to keep telling people how good he is?
