What have we done?

Q:

Yeah. I'm glad you ask good questions.[laughter]

Heiskell:

Well, quite a lot. One of the reasons I joined goes back a long, long way. Namely, I lived in Germany in the twenties. And there were two things I learned there, when I was six or seven. One, I learned to count, because the mark went from one to the dollar to a billion to the dollar in a short time. The other, I listened to my elders laughing about these crazy characters, these Nazis, and this man Adolf something or the other, and saying well, of course, that will all go away. That's just an experience that stayed with me all my life and anytime I see crazies of any kind, my attitude is tamp 'em down before they become powerful. Don't let them ever get very powerful. I guess I feel the same way about the fundamentalists. I think, we've had our impact on the Moral Majority groups. I mean, they've even changed their name, because we made that name sound so evil. We're very much involved in education and First Amendment cases. We, we have been very successful in trying, to prevent censorship of textbooks. We were responsible for the Texas case-

Q:

You have lawyers who bring amicus briefs?

Heiskell:

Yes we have. In Texas there is a committee that passes on all textbooks. And Texas is one of the biggest buyers of textbooks along with California. The committee has been totally packed by
