Heiskell:

He was an overpowering person. I remember once going to see him, I can't remember what it was about, and I went through sort of a rabbit waren and bunch of offices because he wasn't in his office, he was in some other office. And somebody said, “O.K. now go through that door.” Just as I was going to open the door, the door opened from the other side. And there was Johnson. I swear to God he looked at least a foot taller than I am and about a hundred and fifty pounds bigger than I am. That's the impression he gave. He was forever after you for one thing or the other. Did I talk about Johnson City and going down there to the ranch?

Well, this is typical of Johnson. We'd done a story on Lady Bird about parks and things and she had written the captions. And Jerry Hardy the publisher of Life felt that she should be paid something and she said, “No,” she wouldn't take the money. But right near the ranch in Texas on the Pedernales-

On the Pedernales is a little town called Johnson City, and they needed a park and if we cared to give some money, the money would go to build a little park there, in the main square. So it was done. And using this as pretext Johnson invited the Donovans, the Heiskells, and the Hardys to the ranch for the weekend. The ranch on the Pedernales. That's quite an event. You land in your private plane on the runway that's in the ranch, not more than a couple of
