Oh yes, the Cubans were. And of course, that was one of the first big rows because the Cubans all went into exile in 1956-1957. And had been fighting to really turn over the dictator Fidel Castro and to try to get a free press, of course, with no success whatso-ever. In fact the Cubans have now moved to Miami and now Miami has become a Cuban city.

Q:

So in other words, after Fidel took over Cuba was not represented.

Heiskell:

No.

Q:

What about any other specific examples you can remember of any incident that involved you and one of these editors, or-

Heiskell:

Oh yes. There was a marvelous old fellow who ran La Prensa in Peru, Pedro Beetran. He was the voice of freedom in Peru. And at one point he had also been the finance minister and I think the premier of Peru. Things turned bad, as they do in these countries, and a dictatorship was established. And he was arrested, and he was sent to prison which was on an island about five miles off the coast. And he was a remarkable man, as proved by the following. When he was put on the prison boat he lay down on a bench and went sound asleep, thereby infuriating
