They then seemed to believe that their lines crossing the Pacific were the future of Pan American. Since then they've sold it. But it was really a sightseeing tour more than anything else, although I do remember saying that I would like to see something about how they handled communications in China. So an appointment was set up with the head of the radio ministry, I guess it would have been, and two or three of us went over to this building and we were escorted through it. It was the most miserable looking building that I have ever seen. It would make a New York slum building look good. About every thirty yards there would be a twenty-five watt lamp bulb hanging somewhere. Offices had no light. There was no heat. And indeed when we finally met, sat down in the official reception room on rather broken down chairs with three or four of these people. As the meeting went along I got colder and colder and I noticed that the window was open. And I thought that's strange and then I actually saw that there was a
