by graft, and so on and so on. His attitude was, yes, but Chiang is still the best thing there is there and, sort of, he's my man. Madame also had a very strong influence on him, Madame Chiang Kaishek.
Did you ever meet her? Wasn't she hosted in lunches in New York by Luce? You were too junior at that time, or--?
I don't think I was ever there.
How directly was Life affected then, by this attitude towards Chiang and China?
If there was any one subject about which he was willing to weight in fully and consistently, it was the China question. He influenced Life, Time, Fortune, on China consistently. He dominated the policy about China and that's what the Teddy White battle was about finally, when Teddy couldn't stand it anymore.
Teddy White was with Time, right?
Teddy White was Time, yes. He was a correspondent. He was in Chiung King.
Did you ever speak to Teddy White about that at the time?
No.
