Q:

Was it a big deal at the publications when Teddy White quit?

Heiskell:

Yes.

Q:

Tell me about it, what you remember.

Heiskell:

Well, it was a big deal because we all loved Teddy White and he had done a very good job. Losing a Teddy White was bad news to us, and also the rest of us didn't have the same enthusiasm about China that Harry had. So I guess we would tend to feel emotionally with Teddy rather than with Harry on the issue.

Q:

In other words, Henry Luce's strong ideology on China was generally not shared by editorial people at either Time or Life or Fortune?

Heiskell:

That's correct. I don't know about Whit Chambers, he probably would've, but--

Q:

Did you know Whittaker Chambers?

Heiskell:

I think I met him, that's all.

Q:

That's all. Do you have anything to add, as long as we're talking about him, on that entire episode, Chambers, Hiss, Luce's relationship' to Chambers?
