Heiskell:

Q:

What was she saying about you and Donovan after he died?

Heiskell:

She was telling everybody that we were not competent to run the company.

Q:

Well, when you say “everybody,” who was she telling?

Heiskell:

Our friends were telling us, “This is what Clare is telling people.” She obviously wasn't telling us that. In fact, when I started People, I had several sessions with her because I was trying to pick her brains. I figured that that was really something that would interest her, and I guess I was trying to be friendly.

Q:

To get her as an ally?

Heiskell:

No, I didn't really want her as an ally. I did want to pick her brains on it, because it seemed like the kind of magazine that she would have enjoyed editing, and that she would have ideas--and indeed she did have ideas--about it. I had two or three sessions with her. But then I kept hearing all this stuff--I don't know. I just decided it was easier to skip it.

Q:

Did she ever want to be on the board for any reason?

Heiskell:

Oh, she wanted to be an editor! She wanted to be an
