Q:

That got written in--

Heiskell:

But I don't know when it got written in--I think it came later.

Q:

According to Prendergast, that got written in when Donovan was close to leaving to protect really Grunwald's--

Heiskell:

Was it that late?

Q:

Yes; I'll get it for you in a second.

Heiskell:

Well, I guess the answer with Donovan was--he and I had worked together so long, and got on--and understood each other so well, that I don't think he had a real problem with C.E.O., particularly as he knew that I didn't like the title anyway. [laughter] That was sufficient indication. He knew perfectly well that I would not interfere with his business, and, in fact, for over seventeen years, or something like that, he and I worked so closely together that nobody ever knew what happened on the 34th floor. When there were problems that couldn't be solved below, they got solved upstairs, and there was never any--you know, we just made an announcement: “This is how it's going to be.” Period.

Q:

And frequently the announcements came out under both signatures?

Heiskell:

Yes, they would come under both.
