Q:

You said you made a pass at a couple of people. Who did you make a pass at?

Heiskell:

[sigh] I forget who--I forget the people themselves. I'm surprised--there's no record of that? In the book, of the people?

Q:

That you asked?

Heiskell:

No, there isn't any. There isn't any.

Q:

Go on.

Heiskell:

I know that he talked to a friend of mine who was then the editor of the Knight newspapers about this, and I think he talked to somebody who was an editor on a paper in Baltimore. And I forget whether--but anyway, we never did succeed in getting the quote “editor-publisher” that I thought was necessary for any possible success.

Q:

Editor-publisher in one person?

Heiskell:

In one person, probably[?]. In the newspaper business--going back to Church and State--in the newspaper business you'll find that usually it's one person--of course, usually it's a family person, but even so, a newspaper has to have one boss. And sometimes he's the editor, sometimes he's the publisher, usually he's
