Q:

Shepley, but you said he had the commitment.

Heiskell:

No, I said he was the great protagonist of the purchase, and I thought that since he seemed to want this so much, that he would make it his business to make a success of it. He didn't.

Q:

He just didn't spend the time?

Heiskell:

No.

Q:

Was there anything--

Heiskell:

I don't know why.

Q:

Was part of the reason for the purchase, did it have anything to do with, I don't know, some kind of competitive spirit with the Washington Post Company, which owned Newsweek?

Heiskell:

I don't think it was that as much as it was the feeling of having a voice in Washington--that I'm sure had an awful lot to do with it. It was not based on a business proposition. I suppose we would have been satisfied if The Star had made only 3% or 4% profit, but we owned it, and it same as a voice in Washington. That element
