of yourself, which is sent to the Alumni, and a picture--”Don't have a picture that makes you look like a stiff old banker. Preferably in an open-collared shirt.”
So, I sent in a picture of myself in an open-collared shirt--I was the only one wearing a shirt, and I came in fifth out of five [laughters], I think on the strength of the shirt.
Do you remember what year that was?
That must have been in '73. And it started a long, long career at Harvard.
[Derek] Bok was president?
Bok had been president since '70 or '71.
At first, I didn't have the faintest idea what the overseers did: they would meet; they would try to address themselves to various problems, rather badly; and they would spend an awful lot of time arguing about what they were doing. And indeed, they were a structural mess. [laughter].
Describe them in '74: what they were and what they were supposed to be doing.
Well, they didn't know what they were supposed to be doing, that was one of the major problems. It's very difficult--the power is distributed very broadly at Harvard; as Harvard people are
