Q:

Is publishing an issue in this, too?

Heiskell:

We don't call it publishing so much, but I guess it comes down to the same. It's research. We say: “Harvard is a place where you teach and do research.” And if you don't do research, if can become an issue. But the university is fairly broad-minded. Just the other day, somebody was talking about “thank God we are”--because somebody--they cited somebody's name I forget, who spent 11 years writing a book, which turned out to be just the greatest ever. And if we had been very arbitrary, he might not have had the 11 years.

Q:

Have you even seen Bok turn down a promotion for political reasons?

Heiskell:

Political reasons? What do you mean by political reasons?

Q:

That he thought the politics of the person were inappropriate for university, or--I'm talking in case of a political activist, let's say.

Heiskell:

Yes--we have a problem at the Law School which is currently badly split between what you might call “centrists” and a group of faculty members--maybe 20% of the faculty--who run something called “Critical Legal Studies.” And essentially, they don't believe in the law as it is. They're philosophical revolutionaries. I'm not accusing them of being Marxists, although they are mostly left-wingers. And the fight has become quite serious. I think it's
