On candidates?

Heiskell:

On candidates for tenure. Or where they would sort of trade of, you know: “We'll have one of yours if we can have one of ours.” And on occasion, Derek has [pause] killed some appointments, which you might say are for political reasons, although--

From which group?

Heiskell:

From the Critical Legal Studies group--although he maintains, and I think he's right--that they also were lacking in academic qualifications. This gets very murky, because you can see that it's very difficult to tell at what point is this political and at what point is this academic qualifications. But that's the best answer I can give you.

Q:

What about similar examples from the--I can see other departments where I think this might crop up--either the undergraduate or the graduate economics or history departments. Anything which you can recall?

Heiskell:

No; no.
