interested because that would give them a fine excuse for not voting. I had gotten to know both Tim and Christy Sullivan pretty well. They were both in the Senate. They were always referred to as “the Sullivans.” Christy used to follow Tim around like a little white rabbit. It was like Harvey, the play. Tim Sullivan had a face that could have been put on Harvey.

They had a lot of bad stuff on them, but they had such good qualities, such fine qualities that we admire - courage, true loyalty, true kindness of heart. It wasn't done just to get votes. They really felt that every child in their district should get a pair of shoes on New Year's day - every single one, no questions asked. That district was just below the Bowery and New Year's Day was wonderful down there. Every shoe store was open and every shoe store had its orders from Mr. Sullivan. Every child came bearing a ticket which was given out at Tim Sullivan's club house. All you had to do was go to Sullivan's club house, say where you live and you got a ticket. You took the ticket over to any shoe store and they fitted you to a pair of shoes, fitted your size and fitted your taste. You had them the way you liked them. It was a wonderful day. Mr. Sullivan picked up the tab. Where he got the money, nobody ever knew. Even so, he did it. The newspapers published, and I'm sure the
